not的基本意思是“不,没有”,通常用于否定句中,位于动词be、have/has或情态动词之后,或与之一起构成缩写形式; 如:isn’t, don’t, won’t等。
在美国口语中常用ain’t代替am?not/are?not/is?not/has?not/have?not。
not后可接动词的非限定形式:动词不定式、动名词或分词。
在复合句中常可将not置于主语的谓语动词之前,而不放在从句中,这称之为转移否定。
not可用于省略结构中,代替词、词组或整个句子。在一些动词(如think, believe等)、副词(如probably等)和词组(如be afraid等)之后,可用not代替否定从句。
not还可否定形容词和副词,用于表示委婉的语气。
not与all, both, every, always等词连用时表示部分否定。
为了加强语气,可以把not构成的否定的状语等置于句首,并引起主谓倒装。
在否定结构中,如果not这个副词所表达的否定概念是贯穿到下一个成分的,这个成分就得用or来连接,否则要用nor来连接。

1. not通常与be动词、助动词、情态动词连用以构成否定,常略作-n’t。如果否定非谓语动词(不定式、动名词、分词),则置于非谓语动词之前。如:

2. not用在动词think、suppose、believe、expect、hope、seem等,副词probably、perhaps等,及词组be afraid等后面,代替that引导的表示否定意义的从句。如:
-Will they come tomorrow?
-I suppose not.(=I suppose they will not come tomorrow.)
-Will it rain this afternoon?
-Probably not.(=Probably it will not rain.)
-May I come in?
-I’m afraid not. (=I’m afraid you can’t.)
注:如果是肯定回答,则一般用so代替that引导的表示肯定意义的从句。
3. not与all、both、every、always、entirely等连用时可表示部分否定。如:
All is not gold that glitters. 闪光的未必都是金子。
Every person cannot do it. 并非每一个人都能做到这一点。
He is not always so kind to people.他并非总对人那么友好。
注:表示全部否定时,常用none、no、neither、never、 nowhere等,或者not与any、anything等连用也可表示全部否定,另外all、both、every等和带in-,un-,dis-等否定前缀的词连用时,也表示全部否定。如:
I know none of them. 他们中我一个人也不认识。
I don’t know any of them. 我不认识他们中任何一个人。
All your answers are incorrect. 你的答案都不对。
4. 在主从复合句中,not一般根据需要对主句或从句进行否定。如:
He didn’t say he would come. 他没说他要来。
He said he wouldn’t come. 他说他不来了。
但表示看法的常用动词think、believe、suppose等后接宾语从句,或表示感觉的词语appear、seem、feel、feel like、look as if、sound like等后接从句时,这些从句如表示否定意义,一般将not放在主句中,这是英语的习惯用法。如:
I don’t suppose that she will be back soon. 我想她不会很快回来。
It doesn’t seem that we can win. 看来我们赢不了。
It doesn’t look like rain. 看来不会下雨。
I don’t feel I can stand it any longer. 我觉得再也受不了了。
NOT和NO的区别主要在词性与用法有不同。
1、在He is not cleverer than his brother 和 He is no cleverer than his brother的区别。
在这两个句子里,not 和 no 都是作为副词, 这里可以替换使用, 意思是’不’。并没有区别。
例如: not good 跟 no good, 都是作为副词, 表示的意思都是不好。
2、no 和not 这两个单词的元音字母o的读音不同。
no的o 发音为长音 /??/, not的o发音为短音/?/。
3、no 可以做形容词, not不能做形容词。
no 作为形容词, 意思是 ’没有’。
例如: no room 没有房间, no use 没有用处。
4、no 还能作为名词使用, not不能作为名词。
no 作为名词, 意思是否定,否认。
例如: I’ll put you down as a no. --我就当你是反对了。
5、no 和 not 在否定回答的用法不同。
例如: Do you have a book? No, I have not.
